April Writing Recap

CNW_Winner_1500-1In order to track my progress, I like to do a writing recap at the end of every month. Here’s how I did in April.

Last month I undertook two writing challenges, Camp NaNoWriMo and the A to Z blog challenge. One of my goals this year is to blog more often. While I knew 26 posts in one month would be a stretch, I decided to see how far I got. By the end of April, I’d done 18 of the 26 letters and was pretty happy with my posts. I also found a number of other bloggers I liked interacting with, both on Twitter and in blog comments. I plan to write and post the remaining letters (P through W) in May.

Camp NaNoWriMo presented a bigger problem. I couldn’t figure out what to work on. I usually do really well with writing during the April Camp NaNo session, but this year, it was one thing too many. I barely checked in with my cabin, and ended up counting 1,000 words for every day, to mark that I’d done something writing-related. So, in addition, to the blog posts, here are the projects I worked on:

  • Minerva: Thanks to some brainstorming sessions with the ladies of RWchat, I revised the outline that’s been bothering me since last summer. Once that was done, I wrote up a one-page synopsis that helped me spot some more plot holes. Filled those in, then set it aside. Once I know what’s happening with Venus, I’ll continue writing Minerva.
  • H&S: I don’t even know what I did with this one. I might have rearranged the scenes (again), but maybe I just stared at the document and waited for an epiphany. (Sometimes that works. Not this time.) Set it aside for now.
  • RomCom Anthology: I brainstormed an anthology idea with two other authors, but that’s further out in the timeline. We have more planning to do.
  • DVpit: Entered the diverse voices pitch contest run by Beth Phelan.
  • Venus: Revised the first two chapters (again) and rewrote the query (again) with the help of the RWchat gals. (They are lifesavers!)
  • SP: Received feedback from two beta readers and made plans for adding 8,000 words in the 2nd draft –mostly character development for the hero, world-building, and description.
  • CC: New project alert! I got an idea that turned into a few pages of notes. Not sure yet what genre or audience this will land in.
  • FicFest: Entered the FicFest contest. Won’t know any of the results for a couple days. Always fun stalking the contest feed on Twitter!
  • Creative Staycation: I changed the theme and content of the blog, turning it more into an author site. I’ll change the domain eventually.

So…yeah. April fell prey to too many WIPs. Next step: finish the 2nd draft of SP this week. The aim for May is FOCUS.
